Motor-racing was illegal in England in 1903 when Ireland organized the Gordon Bennet Cup and invited their British brothers to enter the competition. Each country was allowed to choose a color for their cars. England tried using red, white, or blue representing their flag, but these colors were already taken by America, Germany, and France respectively. Out of respect for Ireland, British cars were painted shamrock green, a color similar to forest green or moss green, known today as British racing green, or BRG. Getting lost around the beautiful gardens of Kent, I can understand where this inspiration might have come too.
