It's captivating how the massive Mississippi River delta meets the Gulf of Mexico. It's not sudden or abruptly. On the contrary, it happens gradually with beautiful marshes and wetlands that are complex ecosystems and provide vital resources to the state of Louisiana's seafood industry.
Unfortunately, human development gained territory over these lands, creating irreversible damage.
We need to understand that these wetlands buffer stormy seas, naturally preventing floods. They also slow shoreline erosion and can absorb excess nutrients before they reach oceans and estuaries. Tidal marshes provide vital food and habitat for clams, crabs and juvenile fish, as well as offering shelter and nesting sites for several species of migratory waterfowl.
My seeker-of-beauty bird has helped me realize how unbelievable precious these in-between lands are.
